This thesis is presented in two related sections; the first (primary) section is an excerpt of the novel Transplant, and the second, Place in Fiction, consists of two essays addressing the concept of place in fiction. Transplant is the story of main character Jack following his bone marrow transplant. Jack becomes convinced that his recurring nightmares are flashback from his donor's past and travels across contemporaty (2004/5) America and Vietnam in search of his donor and answers. The novel deals with the ideas of the changing boundaries of individual identity, the (un)reliability of memoty, and the effects of the repression of serious discussion or evaluation of the Vietnam War in American society. The first part of Place in Fiction is a creative essay titled 'A Reply to Eudora Welty's Essay |Place in Fiction, '| presented in the form of a letter to the deceased Welty. It seeks to respond to and update the ideas Welty discussed in her 1955 essay. It argues for the use of the photographic terms 'punctum, ' 'studium, ' and 'blind field, ' as used by Roland Barthes in Camera Lucida, in examining literature. It also addresses the contemporaty resw:gence of interest in forms of place-based literature such as regionalism and psychogeography. The second essay, 'Writing Contemporary America: A Search for Narrative Fonn, ' examines the use of literary portrayals of place and culture as social commentary in contemporaty fiction of America, including Transplant, particularly fiction dealing with themes of social disconnection or disassociation and fiction which uses forms of magic or 'exaggerated' realism. It argues that the modern novels addressed in the essay grew from a Condition-of-America tradition that has it roots in the Condition- of-England tradition.
